The team was astounded at the quality and breadth of the submissions this year – an impressive array which included fine writers from 12 different countries. The judges all expressed pleasure at the high caliber of the submissions – and pressure at how challenging it made the choice.

Write Away Europe Spain 2016 Fellowship Award
Write Away Europe is dedicated to fostering fine creative writing and toward that end, each year one merit-based Write Away Scholarship will be awarded to the winning emerging/aspiring writer.
THE WRITE AWAY FELLOWSHIP AWARD: This year's scholarship will be awarded to one qualified participant for the Write Away Spain (April 30 to May 21, 2016) Retreat. The Fellowship will include accommodation, all workshops and events, one on one mentoring and regularly scheduled meals/activities (airfare/transportation to the Write Away Spain Retreat is not included in the Fellowship Award). The Fellowship will be granted to one writer of fiction, memoir of narrative non-fiction.
ELIGIBILITY: Anyone writing in English who has not yet published or self-published a book that has sold over 1,000 copies in the genre of application. Previous winners of the Write Away Europe Fellowships are ineligible. Winners must be 18 years old or older on the day the Write Away Spain Residency begins (April 30, 2016). The award is valid only for the specific year of the contest and may not be transferred or exchanged. Work submitted must be previously unpublished elsewhere, either in print or online. Work may be simultaneously submitted elsewhere, but if it is published or accepted prior to the judging, the judges must be notified.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Jan. 15, 2016
AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT: The Write Away Fellowship Winner will be announced via email and on the website and social media on Jan. 31, 2016. Second and third place finalists will also be announced in the event that the winner is unable to attend. The judging panel is made up of the Staff and Advisory Board of Write Away Europe and the judges decision is final. Winners of the Write Away Fellowship Award who have already registered for the 2016 Write Away Spain conference will receive a refund of any & all deposit monies paid.
APPLICATION FEE: An application fee of $25 must be included with writing submission and there is only one entry per person.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES & FORMAT: Submissions should not exceed 3000 words and must be double spaced, in a black, standard (Times New Roman or Arial) easy-to-read font. Submissions may be excerpts from longer works or a complete story or prose piece, so long as the length limit is adhered to. If you are not submitting the beginning of your book or short story, please let us know where in the project this section is located. Judging is anonymous: Author's name must not appear anywhere in the work, including in headers or footers. Submissions must be in the form of a .doc .docx .odt or .pdf. The submission and payment process is entirely electronic. No paper manuscripts will be accepted.
Rights & Publication: While applicants and Winners retain all publication rights, acceptance of the Write Away Fellowship indicates granting of approval and permission for Write Away Europe to publish excerpts of winning entries on their website and social media for promotional purposes only. Winners will be expected to forward a short bio and head shot to Write Away Europe for promotional purposes.
